Day 1 of the Jodhpur itinerary
Wake up nice and early! Today is a big day of exploring. Start your day by filling your belly with a delicious breakfast in the dining area of Almond Tree Homestay. There is a choice of eggs with toast, cereal and Indian breakfast. After breakfast, take a tuk-tuk out of the gated complex and start your day at Mehrangarh Fort.
Mehrangarh Fort
The fort dates back to 1460 and is one of India’s largest forts. The cost to enter the fort is 600 Rupees ($8.47) for foreign visitors. We had previously read on several blogs and on Indian tour sites that the cost is just for the museum and that the fort is FREE. Whether you opt to pay this price for the fort is entirely up to you, either way, it is worth heading to the fort to check it out anyway.
Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park
After marvelling at the fort, whether that be from the inside or outside, head over to Rao Jodah Desert Rock Park. You don’t need to take a tuk-tuk, just follow the signs on foot. It should take no more than 10 minutes to walk there. The entrance fee is 100 Rupees ($1.41) and you can use the ticket throughout the day. The park was opened in 2011 for visitors. The park has many volcanic rocks and sandstone formations. There is a nice walking trail at the foot of the fort. Bring your camera! If you’re lucky enough, you may even chance upon some of the rare birds that visit the park too.
Jaswant Thada Temple
After completing the walking trail at the rock park. Take a 5-minute walk to the beautiful temple of Jaswant Thada. The entrance is just 50 Rupees ($0.71) and is worth it for its tranquil grounds alone. The temple is the perfect place to have a picnic or grab an ice cream.
Wander the blue streets of Jodhpur
Next, get yourself down into the town and walk around the narrow blue streets, the exact thing that Jodhpur is famous for. Hence the reasons it’s nicknamed the “Blue City”. The blue streets give a nice calming feel. Rumour has it that people paint the streets blue to keep cool during the scorching summer months.
Day 2 of the Jodhpur itinerary
Toorji Step Well
On the second day of this Jodhpur itinerary, head back into the old town to explore more of the blue-washed alleyways. En route, make sure to pop by Toorji Step Well. It is one of the oldest step wells in Jodhpur. It dates to 1740. Here you can see people bathing in the water and jumping from the sloping rooftops.
Sadar Market
Afterwards, make sure to stop by the bustling Sadar Market. Here you can buy anything from fresh fruit and veg to handicrafts. Whilst in the market area, you will also come across the clock tower.
Take a bicycle ride
After stretching your legs around the market, we recommend renting bicycles and cycling around the city. If you’re staying at Almond Tree Homestay, you can use the bicycles for free. You can cycle to a newly built step well and Umaid Bhawan Palace.
Relax in a rooftop jacuzzi
After the morning cycle workout, take the opportunity to relax in a rooftop Jacuzzi. If you’re staying at Almond Tree Homestay, you’re in luck! The jacuzzi overlooks the Umaid Bhawan Palace and is perfect for watching the sunset.
Eat a home-cooked Indian meal
Finally, end your Jodhpur trip with a candlelit, home-cooked Indian meal. Our meal at Almond Tree Homestay was one of the best meals we had in our whole time in India. We tucked into delicious aloo gobi (cauliflower and potatoes), paneer butter masala, and dahl with jeera rice and chapatis. Each of the ingredients was organically grown and locally sourced.
Where to stay in Jodhpur
Almond Tree Homestay
Almond Tree Homestay is situated in a quiet gated neighbourhood. The homestay is run by Megah, Chetan, and their friendly staff. It’s the perfect place for couples and people looking for a quiet stay after a long day of exploring the hustle and bustle of Jodhpur. It’s a relaxing place to unload your bags and sink into the comfy beds for an evening of films on the large-screen TV.
Aside from the large luxuriously decorated rooms, the rooms offer air-conditioning to escape Jodhpur’s blistering sun. There is also the option to order a range of food, from pasta, to pizza, and home-cooked Indian dishes. There is even a Jacuzzi on the rooftop, which is magical during sunset. Furthermore, breakfast is provided every morning and water is complimentary throughout the stay. The homestay also offers tuk-tuk services, so there is no need to worry about finding a tuk-tuk on the street and getting lost.
All in all, this homestay is the ultimate haven! Therefore, we would like to say a MASSIVE Thank you to Megah, Chetan, and all the staff at Almond Tree Homestay for the perfect stay and for making us feel right at home. This place is amazing value money, particularly for the level of luxury you will receive.
